Beyond the Ordinary: A Guide to Living Bigger and Safer | Cyber Safety Tips

In the digital age, where our virtual lives are becoming just as important as our physical ones, it’s time we venture beyond the ordinary and take a proactive step towards cyber safety. As the world is increasingly interconnected, everyone shares the responsibility of securing their cyberspace. Yet, what is cyber safety, and why is it so crucial?
Cyber safety, also known as internet safety, is about protecting ourselves and our information online. It’s akin to locking your doors at night, not because you expect something bad to happen, but because it’s a simple and effective way to keep you and your loved ones safe.

What is cyber safety?

I define cyber safety as personal safety online. Cyber safety is the practice of protecting yourself and your information from harm while using the internet. This includes protecting your personal information, such as your name, address, and phone number, as well as your financial information, such as your credit card numbers and bank account numbers and so much more.

Why is cyber safety important?

Imagine stepping out of your home and leaving your front door wide open. You wouldn’t do that, would you? Cyber safety is no different. Just as you protect your physical home, protecting your cyber home—your online presence—is equally important. With increasing online threats such as cyberbullying, identity theft, and online predation, cyber safety has become a necessity, not just an option.
Think of cyber safety as the seatbelt of your online journey. It might seem like a small thing, but when the unexpected occurs, it can be the difference between walking away unscathed and enduring serious injury. Last year I had a car accident, someone rear ended me at a red light and my seatbelt made a huge difference in me not bumping my head against the steering wheel and suffering a bigger injury. It still took me over six months to fully recover.

Cyber Safety Tips:

Navigating the online world can feel like a colossal task, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few cyber safety tips to help you live bigger and safer in the digital world:

  • Be Intentional and create meaningful and strong passwords that work for you:

Your passwords are the keys to your online kingdom. Make them complex and unique, and remember to change them regularly.

  • Be Aware of What You Share:

Oversharing can leave you vulnerable. Be cautious about what you’re posting and with whom you’re sharing sensitive information.

  • Be Mindful about your devices and choose to keep your software up to date:

Regular updates are essential as they often include vital security upgrades that protect your devices from new threats.

Cyber Safety for Kids: Tips for a Safer Digital Playground

Our children are digital natives, born into a world where technology is a given. But are they safe? Here are some cyber safety for kids tips:

  • Be Intentional and Educate them about the Risks:

From a young age, teach your kids about the potential dangers of the internet and how to recognize and avoid them.

  • Be Aware of Parental Safety Tools:

Leverage tools and software to monitor and limit your child’s online activity.

  • Be Mindful and present when using technology and encourage open communication:

Foster a relationship where your kids feel comfortable discussing their online experiences with you.

What is Cyber Safety for Students?

The digital world offers students a vast universe of information and opportunities. However, it also poses significant threats. Cyber safety for students involves education about responsible and safe behavior online and how to protect themselves from cyber threats.

Who Introduced Cyber Safety?

The concept of cyber safety evolved with the internet itself. As early as the 1980s, organizations like the Computer Security Institute began raising awareness about the need for cyber safety. Today, numerous organizations worldwide are dedicated to promoting cyber safety and educating the public about its importance.
Venturing beyond the ordinary means embracing the advancements of our digital age but doing so with caution and awareness. So, as you explore, learn, connect, and create in this vast digital universe, remember to keep cyber safety at the forefront of your journey.

Cyber Safety at Work

Living bigger and safer isn’t limited to our personal lives. It extends to every facet of our digital interaction, from our work to our social networking and even our financial transactions. Let’s dive deeper into today’s remote work environment, where cyber safety becomes even more critical. Here are some tips to ensure a secure digital workspace:

  • Be Intentional and secure your Wi-Fi:

Make sure your home Wi-Fi network is secure. Use a strong password and consider setting up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) for added security.

  • Be Aware of phishing attempts:

Phishing emails or messages attempt to trick you into revealing sensitive information. Always verify the source before clicking on links or sharing personal data.

  • Be Mindful and choose to backup your data regularly:

Regular backups can save you a world of pain in case of a data breach or loss. Consider using an encrypted cloud service for your backups.

Social Media and Cyber Safety

In the age of selfies and life updates, here’s how to stay safe:

  • Be Intentional and selective with friend requests:

If you don’t know the person, don’t accept their request. It could be a fake account.

  • Be Aware when to use two-factor authentication:

Enable two-factor authentication or multi-authentication for all your social media accounts for an added layer of protection.

  • Be Mindful and decide to check and update your privacy settings:

Ensure your privacy settings are set to a level you’re comfortable with. Check every single social media platform you use

Financial Transactions and Cyber Safety

As we move to cashless transactions, cyber safety is paramount. Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Be Intentional and only Use Secure Websites:

When shopping or banking online, ensure the website’s URL starts with ‘https’ and has a padlock icon in the address bar.

  • Be Aware of the danger of Public Wi-Fi:

Public Wi-Fi networks are often less secure, making it easier for hackers to intercept your information. Avoid banking, changing your password, sending sensitive information or upgrading your phone software and apps using public Wi-Fi.

  • Be Mindful and choose to monitor your accounts:

Regularly review your financial statements for any suspicious activity.

Living bigger and safer in our digital world may feel overwhelming, but remember, it’s a journey, not a destination. Each step you take towards cyber safety, no matter how small, is a step towards a safer online presence.

As our world grows increasingly digital, so too does the importance of cyber safety. Remember, we are all explorers in this vast digital universe, and like any explorer, we must equip ourselves with the knowledge and tools to navigate safely.

We’ve moved beyond the ordinary. We’re not just surviving in the digital age; we’re thriving. By embracing cyber safety, we can enjoy all the amazing opportunities the digital world offers, while protecting ourselves and our loved ones. As the saying goes, “A journey of a thousand sites begins with a single click.” Let’s make sure that click is a safe one!
Remember, you are what you click!
