5 Shocking Social Media Risks We’ve Accepted as Normal – Are You at Risk?

Social Media Risks

Social media has become an integral part of our daily lives. Most of us use it to keep in touch with friends, share our experiences, and stay informed about the world around us. While social media platforms offer countless benefits, they also come with inherent risks that some of us often overlook. In this blog post, we will explore five shocking social media risks that we have come to accept as normal, share real-life stories to illustrate their consequences, and offer practical advice to help you stay safe online.

Before we start, let me ask you. What was the first social media platform you signed for?

Mine was Facebook, although I wasn’t super active as I was dealing with my identity theft nightmare at the time, I  was amazed having a tool to communicate with friends and family. I understand how easy it is to accept or even consider the risks when the thrills of social media consume us.   Let’s explore what some of us may accept as “Normal” and the potential consequences to our privacy and cyber safety.

1- Oversharing Personal Information

One of the most common risks on social media is oversharing personal information. Many people unwittingly provide a wealth of information about themselves, their families, and their lives. This can include posting photos of children, sharing vacation plans, or announcing a new job. This type of oversharing can lead to identity theft, scams, or even physical harm if the information falls into the wrong hands.

For example, imagine posting a photo of your new driver’s license, excited about finally passing the test. You may not realize that the photo contains your full name, address, and other personal information that can be used for malicious purposes. Below is a real example of what oversharing can do.

Oversharing Personal Information

The Stolen Identity

Jessica, a young professional, was excited about her upcoming vacation to Hawaii. She shared her travel plans on Facebook, posting pictures of her itinerary and boarding pass. Unbeknownst to Jessica, a cybercriminal used the information from her boarding pass to access her airline account. The hacker changed her contact details and canceled her flights, leaving Jessica stranded and facing unexpected expenses.

Practical Advice

  • Be Intentional and avoid posting sensitive information such as travel plans, boarding passes, or financial details or your home address, phone number.
  • Be Aware and use privacy settings to limit access to your social media profiles and posts.
  • Be Mindful of the information you share online, even if it seems harmless.
Location Sharing

2- Location Sharing

Another common risk is sharing your location through social media. Many people enable location tagging for their posts or use check-in features to share where they are. While this may seem harmless, it can provide potential criminals with valuable information about your whereabouts and routines.

For instance, posting a photo from your favorite coffee shop every morning might reveal that you are not at home during that time, making your house a prime target for burglary or sharing every detail of where you are may put you or your family in danger.  I was kidnapped in my twenties, if you don’t know the details, check out the story in my book Happily Ever Cyber! For me location services and sharing our whereabouts is a very sensitive feature we need to choose wisely. Let’s review two stories about location services.

The Kidnapping Risk

Sophia, a popular lifestyle blogger, frequently shared her day-to-day activities and whereabouts on social media. She would tag her favorite restaurants, shopping spots, and parks, allowing her followers to keep up with her busy life. One evening, after attending an event, Sophia shared her location on Instagram, unaware that a dangerous individual had been monitoring her posts. The stalker, who had been tracking her movements and patterns, approached Sophia as she left the event… You can imagine what happens next in the story.

The Targeted Home Invasion

David, a father of two, regularly checked in at various locations on social media, including his children’s school and his workplace. One day, while he was at work, burglars targeted his home, knowing his family’s routine from his social media posts. The burglars stole valuable electronics and personal belongings, leaving David’s family feeling violated and unsafe.

Practical Advice

  • Be Intentional and  extremely cautious when sharing your location on social media, as it can make you vulnerable to stalking, kidnapping, or other criminal activities. Consider disabling location services for your social media apps and closing the social media apps while traveling.
  • Be Aware that you can limit location sharing to a small circle of trusted friends and family members, rather than sharing it publicly.
  • Be Mindful of your surroundings and trust your instincts if something seems off or suspicious. If you feel unsafe, don’t hesitate to reach out to someone you trust or the authorities. Choose wisely when sharing your daily routines or habits.

3- Connecting with Strangers

Social media platforms allow us to connect with people from all over the world, but this can also pose risks. By accepting friend requests or followers from strangers, you may be granting them access to your personal information and daily activities. This can lead to unwanted contact, stalking, or harassment.

What are the potential dangers when connecting with strangers on social media?

Catfishing and Online Deception

One of the most common risks associated with connecting with strangers on social media is catfishing. This term refers to the act of creating a fake profile using someone else’s photos and personal information, with the intention of deceiving others. Catfishers often engage in manipulative tactics, such as establishing emotional connections with their victims, which can lead to heartbreak, financial loss, or even blackmail.

Connecting with Strangers

Cyberbullying and Harassment

Connecting with strangers online can also expose you to cyberbullying and harassment. In some cases, individuals may use social media platforms to target others based on their appearance, beliefs, or opinions. This can lead to a toxic online environment, causing emotional distress and potentially impacting mental health.

Users often feel a sense of anonymity and detachment when interacting online, leading some to engage in harmful behavior. Cyberbullying can have severe consequences, including emotional distress, mental health issues, and, in extreme cases, self-harm or suicide.

To combat cyberbullying, report abusive content or users to the social media platform and block the person responsible. Additionally, maintain open lines of communication with friends and family members to discuss any concerns or experiences with online harassment.

Scams and Financial Fraud

Hackers, scammers, and Cybermonsters are increasingly using social media to target unsuspecting victims. They may pose as potential romantic partners, friends, or even authority figures, using social engineering techniques to gain trust and access personal information. Once they have gathered enough data, these criminals can exploit their victims for financial gain, such as stealing their identity or convincing them to send money.

Exposure to Inappropriate or Offensive Content

Lastly, connecting with strangers on social media can expose you to inappropriate or offensive content. As you have no control over what others share or post, you may inadvertently encounter harmful materials that can provoke strong emotional reactions or cause psychological distress.

Let’s review the short but real story below.

The Stalker

Emily, a college student, accepted a friend request from a seemingly nice guy named Tom, who appeared to share mutual friends. Over time, Tom became increasingly intrusive, commenting on and liking Emily’s posts and photos obsessively. Emily started receiving strange messages and even packages at her dorm from Tom, making her feel threatened and uncomfortable.

Practical Advice

  • Be Intentional and review a person’s profile and mutual connections before accepting their request. Check when the profile was created, do a reverse image check of their pictures in google search. Most importantly, remember, you’re in charge!  it’s your choice to accept a friend request from a stranger.
  • Be Aware when accepting friend requests from strangers and know that you can block and report any user who  engages in harassing or stalking behavior or their profiles seem suspicious. Block and report! Even if the platforms don’t take that profile down, it won’t show up in your account.
  • Be Mindful and if something seems off or suspicious, trust your instincts and decline the request.

4- Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks

In today’s digital landscape, social media platforms serve as a breeding ground for social engineering and phishing attacks. Cybermonsters cunningly impersonate familiar contacts or reputable organizations to deceive users into revealing sensitive information or clicking on malicious links.

The consequences of falling for such attacks can be severe, leading to identity theft, financial loss, and compromised security. As we navigate our online lives, it’s crucial to recognize these lurking dangers and maintain vigilance when confronted with suspicious messages or requests. Let’s review the next story.

The Scammed Grandparent

Sarah, a retired grandmother, received a Facebook message from someone claiming to be her grandson, saying he was in trouble and needed money urgently. Concerned, Sarah sent the money, only to find out later that her grandson was safe and had not contacted her. Sarah fell victim to a social engineering scam, losing thousands of dollars.

Practical Advice

  • Be Intentional and verify the authenticity of such requests by contacting the person directly through another method, such as a phone call or text message.
  • Be Aware and educate yourself and your loved ones about common social engineering tactics to avoid falling victim to scams.
  • Be Mindful and stay fully present before responding to unsolicited messages or requests for money or personal information.
Fake News and Misinformation

5- Fake News and Misinformation

The spread of fake news and misinformation on social media has become a significant concern in recent years. These false stories can influence public opinion, cause panic, or even incite violence. As a social media consumer, it is crucial to be aware of the potential for misinformation and to fact-check stories before sharing or believing them.

These two stories reflect the consequences of fake news. Both stories relate to me personally as physical security is very important in my life. A part of me in the past felt desperate trying to find answers and ideas to solve health issues.

The Neighborhood Panic

In a peaceful suburban neighborhood, residents were shocked to discover a viral social media post claiming that a dangerous criminal had escaped from a nearby prison and was hiding in the area. The news spread rapidly, causing fear and panic among the community members. Parents kept their children indoors, and neighbors began to view each other with suspicion.

As the anxiety in the neighborhood reached a fever pitch, local law enforcement stepped in to investigate the claim. It was soon revealed that the story was a complete fabrication, originating from a prankster’s fake news website. Although the panic subsided, the incident left lasting scars on the community’s sense of trust and security.

The Misleading Health Advice

One day, a social media post began circulating, claiming that a common household ingredient could cure a variety of serious illnesses. The post, accompanied by a compelling testimonial and a seemingly scientific explanation, quickly went viral. Desperate for a miracle, thousands of people began to self-medicate with the ingredient, hoping to find relief from their ailments.

Tragically, the false information led to a number of adverse health consequences, as the ingredient was not only ineffective but also potentially harmful when consumed in large quantities. The fake news had a devastating impact on those who had trusted the misleading advice, with some experiencing irreversible damage to their health.

Practical Advice

  • Be Intentional and use reputable sources and verify information through multiple channels.
  • Be Aware of sensational headlines and stories that provoke strong emotional reactions, as these are often designed to manipulate and deceive.
  • Be Mindful and stay fully present when sharing information before contributing to the spread of fake news.

In summary, while social media has revolutionized the way we connect and communicate, it is essential to recognize and address the risks associated with these platforms. By being Intentional, Aware and Mindful of the information we share, the connections we make, and the content we consume, we can enjoy the benefits of social media while safeguarding our privacy, safety, and well-being. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and stay safe online. Be I AM!
